Sea Lion Linocut

Watching sea lions flip and swim around each other showing off their aquatic acrobatics to visitors at the Buffalo Zoo is the source of my inspiration for this piece. It started with a late night (quick) line drawing of a couple sea lions and ended up becoming a lino cut printed with a distressed effect in black ink. I always appreciate the therapeutic nature of the entire creative process – from initial idea to working out layout and various design elements , to the final reveal of the finished work. Also how mini projects can re-ignite the spark on other projects that for whatever reason have not progressed.

I very much needed to switch gears on a ship lino cut that I was having a difficult time seeing the design within the mess of thin carved lines it had become. It was definitely the push I needed to complete it. The thing with quick projects is that they remind you that there is an end; giving you something else to focus on to clear your head of doubt. Because I was beginning to forget to have fun with it and that I can learn from mistakes I thought I saw before the final design revealed itself. (Ship update to come).

This finished print is available on my Etsy shop.
